Virtual Redlands Bicycle Classic: The Data
Over the weekend, the Saris + The Pro’s Closet team took on first ever Virtual Redlands Bicycle Classic put on by Project Echelon. The event was comprised of two events: a 30-mile criterium on Friday, and a 40-mile road race on Sunday. Velonews put out an incredible recap of the events if you want the shortened version of the weekend! Otherwise, the full streams of the racers are at the bottom of this post!
On Zwift there are two major inputs to determine performance on the platform: weight and power.
Firstly, to ensure the fairest racing possible, all of our racers performed live video weigh-ins: demonstrating the calibration of the scale with a marked reference weight, weighing in, then weighing in while holding the marked weight. This process is commonplace in the eSports Pro-Am racing circuit, and ensures that racers weights are accurate.
Secondly, each racer recorded a secondary (and in some cases, tertiary) source of power from either an on-bike power meter or their Saris H3 smart trainer to compare to the source used in-game. This process ensures that the data in the game is backed up by a second source to demonstrate the accuracy of the data used to determine race performance.
