Dan’s passion for cycling started at the age of 10 whereby mountain biking was his love. It wasn’t until he was 18 when he made the switch to road — realizing the longer and hillier nature of road racing suited him better coupled with greater opportunities to travel worldwide.
Dan’s first major result was winning the British National Road Race Championships in 2004. This brought with it a double achievement, as an accident while out training less than 12 months prior had left him with two broken knee caps and doctors saying he would never walk again. Needless to say, this was all the motivation Dan needed to get back on the bike.
The following 2 years saw Dan moving to France to race as an amateur. He took wins in the Prix de la St Amour and the Tour de Beaujolais, earning him the opportunity to ride for DFL-Cyclingnews in Belgium. During the 2007 road season, Dan achieved top-10 places in the prestigious Tour of Britain and the mountainous Tour of Qinghai Lake.
Dan spent the 2008 racing season with An Post/M.Donnelly/Sean Kelly Racing Team, where his most notable win was taking the overall win in the Tour of the Pyrénées. During this time Dan also obtained stellar results by finishing 13th in the Tour of Ireland and 7th in the Tour of Britain.
In the 2009 road season, Dan joined the Cervélo Test Team. His opening race being the historic Paris-Nice; one of the hardest early-season races in the World Tour. During his time with the Cervélo Test team he obtained a superb 16th in the GP di Lugano and 6th in the Tour of Romandy Team Time Trial. Unfortunately the second part of his season was affected by a broken wrist in May, but he bounced back to win the National Hill Climb championships at the end of the season.
In 2010 Dan signed his 2-year contract with the resurrected British Team Raleigh. During his time at Team Raleigh Dan won the National Hill Climb Championships for the second time in a row, and finished 7th in the National Championships, 7th in the Tour of the Pyrénées, and 7th in the Rutland Melton Classic (UCI 1.2).
Dan retired from professional road racing in 2011 to focus on running his company: Dig Deep Coaching. Still keen to enjoy the bike, he mountain biked regularly and ended up competing again for his own enjoyment, which included being on the winning team at Wiggle Mountain Mayhem, Wiggle Enduro 6 and Sleepless in the Saddle. Dan’s most noteworthy results on the mountain bike include several National MTB XC Series Elite and UCI podium places, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd-places at the National Elite Marathon MTB Championship.
In 2014, Dan made a return to road racing joining Metaltek-Kuota. Despite no longer being a full-time professional and running his own business, he regularly finished top-10 in the national series and UCI races in the UK against the country’s strongest professional road teams. Dan’s biggest victory during this comeback was in 2017, when he won the Rutland-Melton Cicle Classic UCI 1.2 Race. After this stepping off the podium, Dan decided this was the perfect time to finally step away from road racing so he could spend more time with his young family.
In 2018, Dan began racing and riding on Zwift to have some fun while still scratching that competitive itch. Zwift is perfect for people with limited time, as you can still race at a good level without having to travel or dedicate endless amounts of hours. With his power-to-weight from racing in the World Tour and years of hill climb racing, he was instantly a dominant rider in the game. He spends 5-6 days a week racing the hardest races he can find in-game, and pushing himself and his teammates as hard as he can!
